Dr. Demetrius Constantine Dounis

Dr. Demetrius Constantine Dounis also known as D. C. Dounis, was an influential teacher of violin and string instrument technique, as well as violinist, violist, mandolin player, and medical doctor.

Dounis is the author of over 15 publications dedicated to the study of violin technique. As a teacher, Dounis had instructed many of the world’s finest string players including Joseph Silverstein, David Nadien, William Primrose, and George Neikrug.

Dounis taught a revolutionary approach to string playing which he dubbed “The Science of Expressive Technique.” Today, it is more commonly referred to as “The Dounis Method.” By analyzing the playing of the great violinists of his time, Dounis had been able to discover all of the elements that made someone a natural player.

Through a series of simple exercises based on physiology, scientific principles, and one’s own native instincts, Dounis had a created a method that could transform an average player into a natural player - allowing any violinist to reach their full expressive and technical potential.
